Stockpile NOW

budget stockpile tariffs Jan 15, 2025

Things to stockpile before January 20!!!

With another Trump presidency looming, he said he is going to impose a 10% tariff on goods from China and 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. 25%. We’re going to focus on what affects us most, like groceries and household items. Let’s make a list of what we can stockpile. What we are going to be paying more for. And why the same American made products will increase in price. Remember this isn’t a red or blue thing, it’s just basic economics.

Ferris Bueller's Tariff Scene

The first shots have been fired in a new trade war. Prices will go up and shortages have started. Incase you don’t know how a tariff works, it’s basically a tax added to goods coming into a country. That includes components of a product. An example is car parts. The car may be assembled in the US, if the parts are made in another country, the car price will go up. The company selling the car isn’t going to eat the price increase, the cost is going to be passed on to the consumer. You are going to pay extra, not the company.

So let’s cut right to the chase and make our list of what we need to buy now. How it will affect middle and low income Americans.

Chinese goods will be taxed 10% higher.  – all electronics are going up. So if you’re in the market for a new appliance, buy it now. Plastic bottles. When there’s a natural disaster, you need water bottles.

I don’t buy any food products from China. None. Google videos of their water, air and soil quality.

So let’s go to Mexican and Canadian Goods.

Both countries produce car parts and China is the second largest producer. US assembled vehicles are going up $2100 and cars made in Mexico and Canada will go up $8000 to $10000 or more.

Mexico has food safety regulations. Because they are large exporters to the US and Europe, they comply with safety and traceability requirements, regulate pesticide use, they heavily regulate GMO use, and they meet international export standards.

After all the ongoing food recalls from American made foods, I have confidence is in Mexican goods. This summer I was one of the people who got sick with listeria from American made deli meat. On my birthday! I was sick for about 3 weeks. It was so horrible. There were people in my county who died. FYI – you can get notification alert from the US food and drug administration. You’ll get an email almost every day, sometimes a few times a day. I’ll link the website in the description box.

Shelf stable foods you can stockpile are coffee, teas, nuts, cereals, pickled foods, fruit juices, honey, jar sauces, spices and seasonings. Beer and hard liquor. I haven’t drank tequila since I was a 15 years old and at a Squeeze concert at the old Ritz. Let’s file that one under stupid teenager with a fake id. It was horrible.

Fresh products are going to be 25% higher are fruits and vegetables like avocados, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, garlic and cabbage. Dairy products like eggs. Meat, fish and seafood. Baked goods.

From Canada there's cereal, flour, starch and milk products, cork, printed books, wool, charcoal, wood, aluminum. Iron and steel appliances, carpets and condoms.

These tariffs will disproportionately hurt the middle- and low-income Americans and will cost the average family and additional $3000.

What can you do right now. Start budgeting to purchase shelf stable items. If you need a new electronic, start shopping now. If you need a car, either shop now or wait 4 yrs to purchase it.

Here’s how and why American goods are going up in price. We will use tomatoes as an example. Let’s say they are a $1 a lb. Tariffs now make them $1.25 a lb. If the consumer isn’t buying the more expensive imported tomato at $1.25, they will buy the cheaper American tomato at $1. As demand increases, the American tomato price increases. Now the American tomato is $1.25 a lb. The farmer is producing more tomatoes but he/she needs to buy more farm equipment, the farm equipment components come from Canada. The equipment is now 25% more expensive. The farmer needs more fertilizer and logistics to get the extra tomatoes to the market.

The farmer will need to raise the tomato price to $1.50. The consumer is going to pick the imported tomato because they are cheaper.

Here’s where it gets even more complicated. Do you think when one country imposes a tariff that the other country isn’t going to retaliate? How dumb does someone need to be to think the other countries won’t raise tariffs against American goods. Really? We’re a service nation, those big corporations moved our jobs overseas to take advantage of cheap labor and bigger profits for their share holders.

I’m I the only one that remembers the US – China trade war of 2018?

American Soybean producers couldn’t make a profit selling to China because the then president raised tariffs on some Chinese products. How many American farmers lost everything.

Understand the long term impact. Understanding how tariffs affect your bottom line, will help you make better decisions.

It’s basic economics 101 they we all learned in high school.

I hate being the bearer of bad news but tighten your belt, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Sorry for the depressing blog but it's import for us to be prepared.
